Though newborns are still developing clear sleep and wake cycles, most move between "active/light" and "still/deep" sleep every hour or so. Learn about your baby’s signs of "active/light" sleep. Wait patiently a few minutes to see if she will return to "still/deep." As your baby puts these "active" and "still" cycles together, she will learn to sleep through the night.

Your baby is ready to eat in the Ready Zone. But learn about the almost Ready Zone as shown above. Her eyes are open, but she is drowsy and looks "out of it." To help this baby get to the Ready Zone, undress her, change her diaper, or give her a gentle sway.

Surprisingly, this baby gets even sleepier when her mom tries to wake her up to eat with energetic stimulation. Instead, learn how more subtle stimulation will bring her to the Ready Zone. Change her, and then place her on her back. Her normal newborn startle response will often wake her up.

The H.U.G. DVD shows you how to recognize the Resting and Ready Zone and gives you tips for getting your baby to the best zone for sleeping and eating well.
